About the book:
English title: Pepper
Coming-of-age YA novel, 272 pages.
February 2026

Nils Mohl has received numerous awards for his novels, most recently the James Krüss Prize for his life's work.
A touching coming-of-age novel about the search for one's father – and oneself.

At first glance, 17-year-old Pepper has it all: a beautiful home in Hamburg's HafenCity; a cool mother who is a politician; a really good friend named August. And soon she will graduate from high school. Nevertheless, there is a big gap in her life: Pepper does not know her father, who was a fleeting affair of her mother's, and her mother refuses to reveal his name. Pepper is obsessed with the subject. She jots down zillions of unanswered questions in her notebook – because how can you know where you want to go in life if you don't know where you come from? But then the moment finally arrives: Pepper finds out her father's name. And that he lives only a few kilometres away from her. Pepper is determined to finally get to know him. Without further ado, she decides to move into his flat incognito. After all, what better way to get to know each other than under the same roof?

About the author:
Nils Mohl, born in 1971, lives and works in Hamburg. He has won the German Youth Literature Prize and the Oldenburg Children’s Prize, among others, for his novel “Es war einmal Indianerland” (This Was Once Native American Territory).

As far as I’m concerned, Nils Mohl remains one of the best authors of young adult fiction we have in Germany with Pepper. Jugendbuchtipps, 04.03.2026

In doing so, Mohl succeeds in bringing together feelings and themes that [...] affect everyone in some form as they grow up: a sense of disorientation, confusion and the feeling of being ‘different’. Augsburger Allgemeine, 14.03.2026
